Be more the observer and less the feeler

There is a profound shift that happens when we stop getting swept away by every emotion, sensation, and thought that arises within us. Most of us live as the feeler — the one who is consumed by feelings, pushed around by moods, dragged into stories by the mind. When sadness comes, we become sad. When anger arises, we become angry. We merge so completely with our inner weather that we forget there is sky behind the clouds. But the ancient tantric masters knew something different. They taught that the real Self is not the feeler — it is the one who observes the feeler. When you sit in meditation, you begin to notice something extraordinary: a thought appears, and if you do not chase it, it simply dissolves. An emotion rises, and if you do not feed it with attention, it passes like a wave. The body may ache, the heart may flutter, yet there is a part of you that remains untouched, watching it all with quiet curiosity. This observer is not cold or detached. It is vast, spacious, and deeply compassionate. It allows everything to be exactly as it is — no resistance, no clinging. **So — should life be observer more or felt more?** The answer is not either/or. It is both, but in the right order. Feel life fully. Do not suppress the beauty of a sunrise, the tenderness of love, or even the sting of loss. Feeling is the richness of being human. But do not drown in it. Hold your feelings the way the sky holds clouds — allowing them to drift through without becoming the storm. The observer is not the enemy of feeling. It is the ground beneath feeling. When you are rooted in awareness, emotions become colors in the sky rather than hurricanes on the sea. You feel more deeply precisely because you are not lost in what you feel. You are free to experience everything — joy, sorrow, ecstasy, pain — without being shattered by any of it. Practice this today: whenever a strong feeling arises, instead of saying "I am angry" or "I am anxious," say "Anger is here" or "Anxiety is present." Notice the small but radical difference. You are no longer the feeling. You are the awareness in which the feeling lives and eventually fades. The more you rest as the observer, the less life feels like a storm and the more it feels like a vast, open sky — ever clear, ever peaceful, no matter what clouds drift through. Feel life. Just feel it from the seat of the witness. That is where true freedom lives.
